Compare Datadog vs Grafana Cloud annual cost based on hosts, custom metrics, log volume, and APM throughput.
| Hosts monitored | 50 |
| Custom metrics (per-host) | 1,500 |
| Logs ingested GB/month | 250 |
| APM services | 12 |
| Datadog host $/month | $23 |
| Grafana host $/month | $0 |
| Datadog annual cost | $29,184 |
| Grafana Cloud annual cost | $15,948 |
Datadog has the best UX in observability. It also has the highest bill. For organizations under 100 hosts, the convenience usually wins. Above 200 hosts, the bill compels evaluation.
At 200 hosts with 1k custom metrics each + 500 GB logs/mo + 30 APM services: Datadog ~$30k/mo, Grafana Cloud ~$8-12k/mo. At 1,000 hosts: Datadog ~$150k/mo, Grafana ~$30-50k/mo. The gap widens dramatically at scale.
If team has SRE bandwidth: maybe. Self-hosted Mimir + Loki + Tempo on Kubernetes is genuinely complex; expect 0.5-1 FTE forever. For most companies <500 hosts, Grafana Cloud Pro is cheaper than self-hosting + the FTE.
Significant. Dashboards: not portable (different query languages). Alerts: not portable. Integrations: re-do agent installs. Realistic migration: 4-8 weeks for a 50-host environment, 2 SREs full-time. Don't switch unless annual savings >$50k.
