Drywall sheets calculator — walls, ceilings, and full room estimates

Estimating drywall incorrectly costs contractors real money. Under-order and you make a mid-job run, burning hours and paying retail at the big-box store. Over-order by too much and you have a pallet of drywall to return (if the supplier even accepts returns on partial loads). The formula is straightforward — the challenge is not forgetting the deductions and adding the right waste factor.

The area formula

Wall area for a rectangular room with no openings is:

Wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Ceiling height

Then subtract for each door and window. Standard door opening: 3 ft × 7 ft = 21 sq ft. Standard window: 3 ft × 4 ft = 12 sq ft. These are rough deductions — actual rough openings vary, but these are the industry standard estimates when you don't have the window and door schedule in hand.

Ceiling area is simply length × width. Check the ceiling option if you're drywalling the ceiling too.

Sheet sizes and what they mean for your job

  • 4×8 (32 sq ft) — the standard DIY and residential sheet. Manageable weight (about 52 lb for 1/2-inch) and fits in a pickup truck. More seams to tape.
  • 4×10 (40 sq ft) — good for 9- or 10-foot ceilings. One sheet covers the full height with no horizontal seam, which saves significant taping time.
  • 4×12 (48 sq ft) — professional standard. Fewer seams = faster taping, less compound, better finish. Requires a drywall lift for ceilings. Too heavy (about 75 lb) for most single-person DIY.
  • 4×16 (64 sq ft) — commercial and high-ceiling work only. Requires specialized equipment and experienced crews.

This calculator uses 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) as the standard. If you plan to use 4×12 sheets, divide the sheet count by 1.5 to approximate.

Drywall thickness guide

  • 1/4 inch — curved walls only, or laminating over existing drywall for a smooth re-surface. Not structurally sound for standard applications.
  • 3/8 inch — lightweight, used for curved arches and some mobile home repair. Not recommended for standard construction.
  • 1/2 inch — standard for interior walls on 16-inch OC framing. The default residential choice.
  • 5/8 inch (Type X) — required for ceilings (sag prevention), fire-rated assemblies (attached garages, between floors, stairwells), and commercial applications. Use this on all ceilings.
  • Moisture-resistant (green board or purple board)— bathrooms, laundry rooms, and areas with high humidity. Not waterproof — still requires cement board behind tile in wet areas (showers, tub surrounds).

Why 10% waste?

Drywall sheets are cut at walls and around outlets, switches, and corners. Every cut creates a scrap piece that may or may not be usable elsewhere. Damaged corners from delivery and handling typically claim 2–3% of a delivery. Around windows, electrical panels, and HVAC penetrations, cuts become more complex and waste more material. Ten percent is conservative and industry-standard for a simple rectangular room. Complex floorplans, rooms with many windows, or rooms with awkward angles push waste to 15%.

Ordering: pallets and minimums

Drywall is sold in full units of 50 sheets per pallet for 4×8, or 36 sheets per pallet for 4×12. If your order is close to a pallet quantity, round up — the per-sheet cost at pallet pricing is significantly lower, and having a few extra sheets for repairs is always worthwhile. Most lumberyards require a minimum delivery order (often one pallet) or charge a drop fee. Plan your delivery for when the framing is complete and inspected, not before.

Materials to order alongside drywall

  • Joint compound — 1 bucket (4.5 gal) per 100–150 sq ft for full finish. One bucket per 500 sq ft for tape coat only.
  • Paper or mesh tape — 1 roll (500 ft) per 800 sq ft of drywall.
  • Drywall screws — 1 lb per 10–15 sheets for walls; more for ceilings (closer screw spacing).
  • Corner bead — measure all outside corners in linear feet. Standard metal corner bead comes in 8-foot lengths.
